INTRODUCTION

As a youngster I found myself going to the cinema regularly. The activity, excitement and experience of seeing a new movie release on the big screen with friends, dates on weekends or on half price Tuesdays was a cultural practice and social norm. The content, reputation or quality of the film didn’t matter. Certainly not as much as it does nowadays. In fact I would be lucky to make it to the cinema twice a year in recent years.

Although I do still find going to the cinema exciting and a great way to experience a film I am certainly a lot more selective about which movies I choose to watch at the cinemas. There are several reasons for this including nowadays ticket prices, the advance in technology with digital streaming offering convenient, cheaper online access to new movie releases and rare movies. In fact the size of our regular home screens has increased which indicates the popularity of people watching films from home in todays world. However I do feel certain films will always be better experienced at the cinema.

TWO FILMS I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING AT THE CINEMA AND WHY

1. AVATAR- Watching this movie for the first time in 3D at a large cinema made me want to go to the cinemas regularly again. I felt like this movie was purposely made for the cinemas. Personally I don’t think watching a movie like this at home could top the cinemas no matter how big your home screen is. The full 3D cinema experience made you feel like you were part of the movie and inside the world of the Avatar.

2. STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON- At age 12 I clearly remember the day I bought this record and how much I was a fan of NWA growing up. I remember begging my late father who’s supervision I needed to be able to buy the album and going to the record store with him to buy it. This also makes the memory special to me. The groups songs apart from being explicit, cool and entertaining for a rebellious adolescent brought up issues and experiences I could relate to.

As soon as I heard about this movie being released and playing in cinemas I knew I had to watch it with a bucket of pop corn, big screen, enhanced sound and genuine cinema atmosphere. Remembering how excited I was to see Boys In The Hood at the cinema this film brought back that feeling for me.

WHAT ASPECTS OR TECHNIQUES USED IN FILM ENGAGE ME

As an audience member I would say I relate and interact with films emotionally. Although I appreciate different genres of film, age and cultural background can motivate my interest for a film.  For example films like Straight Out Of Compton I found easy to relate to. I have always been a fan of 70’s Blaxploitation movies, Jamaican movies and films about black people and lifestyle. For me the connection is automatic with these styles of films unless they are boring and poorly made which is the case with any film. I would consider myself an active audience member
